What is Juvederm?
Juvederm, like Restylane, is a dermal filler that is injected to raise the skin in a wrinkled area to eliminate the wrinkle. It’s most effective in the treatment of static lines lines that are always visible, such as nasolabial wrinkles and marionette lines. The other type of wrinkles, dynamic lines, only become visible when a certain facial expression is made. These are more often treated with a neurotoxin such as Botox, which temporarily paralyzes the muscles that cause the wrinkles. In many cases, Juvederm is used to supplement Botox treatments to reduce the effects of aging.
Where Can Juvederm Be Injected?
Juvederm for Wrinkles
Juvederm is extremely effective for removing the effects of aging around the nose and mouth. Nasolabial lines (the parentheses from the nose to the mouth) and marionette lines (wrinkles that extend from the corners of the mouth to the chin) are static lines they are not caused by the contraction of muscles during facial expressions. For this reason, Juvederm is especially effective in treating these types of wrinkles and the benefits normally last from 9 to 12 months.

Juvederm for Lips
Juvederm is also extremely effective in improving the appearance of the lips. As we age, vertical wrinkles begin to form around the lips. These are often called “Smoker’s Lips,” although they occur in non-smokers, as well. Juvederm fills in these wrinkles to give the lips a smoother, more youthful appearance. Aging can also cause the lips to look thinner and deflated. Again, Juvederm gives lips a fuller, younger appearance.
Juvederm Around the Eyes
When used around the eyes, Juvederm is most commonly used to improve the appearance of the tear troughs. As we age, the tear troughs often take on a hollow appearance. Juvederm can fill in these troughs to give the eyes a more energetic, alert appearance. Crow’s Feet at the corner of the eyes are also extremely common. Generally speaking, Botox is the best treatment to reduce the effects of Crow’s Feet, but Botox often won’t completely eliminate the wrinkles. For that reason, we often use a combination of Botox and Juvederm to treat patients with Crow’s Feet.
Other Uses for Juvederm
Although not as common, Juvederm can be used for other problem areas of the face, as well. The shape of the nose, for example, can be changed using Juvederm. A flat nose bridge can be softened, and the shape or size of the nostrils can be changed. Cheekbones can also be augmented or cheeks can be softened using Juvederm. The pre-jowl sulcus (area between the jowl and the chin) can be filled as it takes on a hollow appearance.
Juvederm has many uses, and can often be used to give the face a more youthful appearance. Juvederm treatments in most areas will last 9-12 months, although some, like the tear troughs, normally last even longer.
